It was a few hours to sunset and Margaret decided to schedule a beach meetup with Liz, Sarah, Donna, Chris, Dave, and the kids. The perfect spot was directly across the street from Dave’s and Chris’s houses.

Margaret turned up first at the beach with Abby and Harper and set out some chairs. Walking to the water’s edge, she gauged the temperature—still brutally cold, which was to be expected for early June.

Dave, Donna, Liz and her boys each arrived separately shortly after, positioning their chairs and blankets on the now mostly empty beach since the throng of beachgoers from earlier had packed up and gone home. Liz’s boys immediately ran over to play with their cousins, making the sisters smile over their kids’ close bond.

Margaret sat in her chair and pulled a long-sleeved shirt over her head. “I feel like we’re waiting for a movie to start, but instead it’s the sunset. Sarah and Chris said they’ll be here shortly, by the way.”

Dave looked over and smiled at Margaret, lovingly brushing a stray hair off her face, then stood up. “I’m going to go see what the kids found over there by the water. It looks like a horseshoe crab.”

Margaret grabbed Dave’s hand affectionately. “Have fun!”

Liz smiled at Margaret and Dave’s public display of affection. “Greg said he’ll stop by after he’s done at the restaurant.”

“How’s the restaurant going? I can’t wait to go and eat,” Margaret said excitedly.

Liz let out a deep sigh. “He’s having all sorts of drama over there. I’m starting to wonder if this was a good idea. He seems to be handling it, though. Dale—his friend who owns that restaurant in Collingswood—has been coming around more to help, which has been wonderful.”

Donna sat upright in her chair. “Dale? The guy who was there when I went to the restaurant with you? How does he know him … out of curiosity?”

“They’re old college buddies. Dale is a cool guy. He’s just been through a lot over the last few years.”

Donna pried, “Really? How so?”

“Well, he went through a nasty divorce a few years ago that shattered him. Then, he met someone wonderful a year later, and they dated for a year, but she broke his heart and he’s been quite … different since,” Liz said.

Margaret furrowed her brow. “Different? How?”

Liz laughed. “Well, he’s become quite a—”

Just then, Greg snuck up behind Liz, putting his hands on her shoulders and scaring the life out of her.

Liz yelped. “Greg! Don’t do that. You know my heart can’t take it.”

Greg laughed as Dale walked up next to him. “Hey, guys. This is my friend, Dale. He stopped by the restaurant, and I invited him to our soiree on the beach you’ve all got going.”

Dale put his hand up in greeting while looking around at everyone before his eyes locked on Donna’s again.

Donna’s heart skipped a beat. She’d been hoping she would see Dale again.

Margaret pointed to some vacant chairs. “Here, take a seat in those. I brought them for the girls, but they aren’t going to use them.
